"Business meetings in the South of Russia" program
StavropolStavropol was founded on October 22, 1777 as one of the fortresses of the Azov-Mozdok military-fortified line, and It was awarded the status of city in 1785. Translated from Greek Stavropol means "City of a cross". Under the legend, at laying the fortress the Vladimirskiy regiment soldiers found out a stone cross. Well-known specialist on studies of local lore G.N.Prozritelev considered, that this cross belonged to the first Christians, compelled to disappear here from prosecutions and persecutions. Due to this find, in his opinion, the fortress was given the name of Stavropol. This name further appeared to be historically true because it had reflected not only the fact of a stone cross finding here, but also a role of this city in the development of Orthodoxy in Northern Caucasus. But the History had disposed in such a way, that Stavropol became the capital of the frontier once again.
